Securing high-level city commitments for soot-free buses in Eastern Africa and integrating benefits of adopting soot-free buses in Kenya’s NDC

This project is supporting cities in the Eastern Africa sub-region to adopt Euro VI bus technologies that take advantage of the low-sulfur fuels now available on the local market. It is also supporting Kenya to include the climate benefits of soot-free bus strategies in their Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) reporting mechanism.

This project is supported by the Coalition's Action Programme to Address the 1.5˚C Challenge, a programme developed by Coalition partners in response to the IPCC Special Report on 1.5˚C Global Warming, which emphasizes the need for early action on all climate forcing emissions, including short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), as part of the pathway to stay well below 2˚C.

Objectives

The project will assist the Eastern African cities of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Nairobi (Kenya), Kampala (Uganda), Kisumu (Kenya), Kigali (Rwanda) and Bujumbura (Burundi) in securing commitments to procure the best available bus technology operating at Euro VI and establish regional harmonization of bus standards. It also aims to support the provision of electric buses in Nairobi and introduce the climate benefits from soot-free buses to Kenya’s NDC reporting.

Planned activities

Organizing an East African Soot-free Bus Forum that will include multilateral, bilateral, and institutional donors, as well as the Global Industry Partnership on Soot-Free Urban Bus Fleets (Volvo, Scania, BYD, and Cummins) already established by the Coalition's Soot-free Urban Bus Fleets project.
Assessing and integrating soot-free bus benefits into Kenya’s NDC reporting, including the quantification of SLCP and greenhouse gas emissions reductions from soot-free buses as well as revising Kenya’s NDC transport sector emission targets.
